Heavy Rains Flood The Capital's
Streets

Bandar Seri
Begawan - While typhoon Xangsane slammed into central Vietnam
causing severe destruction, its tail effect was also felt in Brunei
Darussalam, when it brought heavy rains and strong winds over the last
two days.
Early yesterday morning, heavy rains
flooded a section of Jalan Tasek Lama near Jalan Sentosa in the
capital as rainwater rushed down from the nearby hill.
However, being Sunday morning when
most people were still resting at home, the small flood did not cause
amajor traffic jam.
The traffic lights at the j unction
of Jalan Sentosa were not working.
An officer at the Weather Centre,
Department of Civil Aviation, said the tail effect of typhoon Xangsane
did reach Brunei in its mildest form, brought about by south-westerly
winds.
"It is normal for our country to
experience the tail effect of typhoons and tropical storms hitting
regions north of us if the winds blow south-westerly.
"Apart from causing a few
inconveniences to the country such as flying roofs, flash floods, and
uprooted trees, such natural phenomena has never caused any huge
destruction," said the officer.
Meanwhile, another bout of heavy rain
and strong wind on Saturday evening also caused minor damages in
certain places.
A few roofs near Kg Junjungan were
blown away and a few trees were uprooted.
The heavy rains have also washed away
the haze and improved visibility and the PSI reading.

the haze scenario in Brunei Darussalam, Indonesian Kalimantan, Sarawak
and Sabah is expected to persist for sometime. -- Courtesy of Borneo
