Malaysian Sugar Smuggled Into
Brunei: Najib
Kuala Lumpur -
Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said that
there were some quarters who smuggled out and sold sugar to
neighbouring countries including Brunei.
He said the figures on production and
demand in the country showed the supply, of sugar was adequate, The
Star reported. "The problem arises because price's of sugar in
Indonesia, Thailand and Brunei are much higher.
"A large quantity of sugar produced
by our manufacturers are smuggled out of the country by irresponsible
parties," he told reporters in Pekan.
He added that the tendency to sell
the supply "outside" has contributed to the present artificial
shortage. Najib said the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry
had taken steps to address the matter by seeking assurances from local
manufacturers to increase their production.
"We want to prevent an increase in
the prices of sugar," he said. He added that it is a difficult task,
but the government will attend to areas with a critical shortage
promptly. -- Courtesy of Borneo
