Pickpockets Strike At Ramadhan
Stalls
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - A man alleged that he was a victim of a pickpocket
crime when he lost some $45 which he kept in his trouser side pocket
while shopping for food at the Gadong Ramadhan stalls recently.
His experience had prompted him to
warn others to exercise much care when handling and keeping money in
crowded places.
He said he took out $50 from his
wallet to buy food from a stall. After he paid for the food, he put
the change amounting to $45 in his pocket.
"When I was .about to pay for food at
another outlet, I could not find the money anymore," he said.
He added that he totally believed he
was a victim of a pickpocket as he remembered someone brushing against
him.
Luckily for him, he still had a few
hundred dollars which he kept in his wallet to pay for his food
orders.
"Otherwise I would really be
embarrassed to reject the food that I had already ordered," he said.
In a press release last week, the
Royal Brunei Police advised the public to take safety precautions to
prevent the occurrence of criminal activities during the festivities.
Police said bags must be clutched in
front and wallets be placed in the front pockets. If possible, the
wallets must be secured with a chain.
If placed at the back, the pockets
must be buttoned. Pickpockets and bag snatchers are a rare occurrence
in Brunei Darussalam though such criminal incidences had happened in
the Sultanate in the past. --
