Murdered Man Suffered Kidney
Failure
By Ignatius Stephen
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Murdered Royal Brunei Airlines mechanic, Maul bin
Jambu, 44, was a very sick man with his kidneys all but gone, the
Brunei High Court was told. But the wound that finished him off was a
laceration behind the right ear underneath the scalp.
He suffered 49 wounds mainly bruises
all over the body which had a similar pattern, a medical report read
out in court said.
Dr P. Upali Telesinghe, specialist
pathologist in RIPAS Hospital, was testifying this week at the murder
trial of 53-year-old car salesman, Richard Chia Kok Hiong accused of
killing a family of three on December 15 last year at a government
house in Kampong Surusop.
The dead were Maul and his
37-year-old schoolteacher wife, Seniwati binte Untong and their
adopted daughter, Neea Asmira binte Aziz, two years who was smothered
with a pillow.
The hearing is before Chief Justice
Dato Mohd Saied and Justice Dato Steven Chong. Prosecution is led by
Deputy Public Prosecutor Haji Yusree Junaidi and assisted by Pengiran
Nina Jasmine, Counsels Yusof Halim and Siva Sankaran are defending.
Richard is denying all charges.
Richard, a Brunei Permanent Resident
who was arrested after two months after the tragedy, had been held in
police custody ever since and attempts to free him failed.
Continuing his evidence Dr Telesinghe
added questioned by DPP Haji Yusree that Maul's left kidney had
shriveled to 25 grammes whereas the right one was only 30 grammes and
both were granulated and contracted.
"And there was this transplanted
kidney on the right side which was 250 grammes," he told the court.
Both kidneys showed signs of renal
failure and were not functioning very well.
"That was why there were accumulation
of fluid in the abdomen, chest and probably the state of hydrosis,"
the pathologist told the court.
The examination on Maul was conducted
on December 18 some days after the supposed murder.
The postmortem took place at the
RIPAS Hospital Morgue. When he examined the body at about 2pm there
was evidence of putrification and was in a state of decomposition.
Hearing continues.
