SEA Write Award Winner To Receive
Honour In Bangkok

Begawan - This year's sultanate recipient for the SEA Write
Award, Ampuan Dr Hj Brahim Ampuan Hj Tengah, departed for Bangkok
yesterday afternoon to receive the coveted literary recognition given
to regional literary writers.
Present at the airport to see him off
was the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and
Sports, Hj Jemat Hj Ampal; the ministry's Special Duties Officer, Dato
Paduka Hj Mahmud Rj Bakyr; the acting Deputy Director of Dewan Bahasa
dan Pustaka, Dr Mataim Bakar and his staff; and Universiti Brunei
Darussalam (UBD) lecturer, Dr Hj Morsidi Hj Mohamad.
Ampuan
Dr Hj Brahim, the Dean of Faculty of Arts and Social Science, UBD has
been selected by the SEA Write Award Judging Committee of Brunei
Darussalam to be the 2005 SEA Write Award recipient based on his
contributions to literature in the sultanate and the region.
He will receive the award from HRH
Princess Bajrakitiyabha on Wednesday (October 12) at The Oriental
Bangkok.
Commencing Saturday, he will be
having a hectic schedule during the SEA Write Award 2005 week.
Together with recipients of the ten
member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations
(ASEAN), Ampuan Dr Hj Brahim will be attending various activities
including an introduction to the award recipients, meeting with
members of writers associations, having lunches with award sponsors,
and making visits.
Apart from Ampuan Dr Hj Brahim, other
recipients include Acep Zamzam Noor from Indonesia, Bounseune Sengmany
(Laos), Miech Ponn (Cambodia), Wuthichart Choomsanit (Thailand),
Ab'dul Ghafar Ibrahim (Malaysia), P. Krishnan (Singapore), Malou Jacob
(The Philippines) and Im-asara-Phu Tram (Vietnam).
Poet laureate of the Commonwealth,
Virginia Rita Dove, will be this year's guest speaker at the Royal
Gala Night on October ;12 where the recipients will receive their
awards from the royal guest of honour.
Now in its 27th year, the SEA Write
Award is as one of the region's prestigious literature awards.
Its aim is to encourage and recognise
literary talents in the region. Brunei Darussalam sent its first
recipient, Muslim Burmat - Brunei's top novelist - to receive the
award in Bangkok in 1986.
Since then, some 19 literary writers
of various genres have received the coveted recognition for their
literary contributions in the country and the region. --
