Kuala Belait -
A thanksgiving ceremony to mark Brunei's participation in the
Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union Robot Contest (ABU Robocon) 2005 was
held yesterday morning at Jefri Bolkiah Engineering College (MKJB) in
Kuala Belait.
In his welcoming speech, Acting
Principal of MKJB, Cikgu Ibrahim bin Hj Abdul Rahman, said the ABU
Robocon required participants to make robots from scratch to
completion, according to the annual theme, field and rules.
Contestants consisted of top universities or robotic research
institutions from countries such as Japan, China and Vietnam.
The college team, SAMOT, he added had
worked odd hours to complete the project using second-hand automotive
motors, toy motors and baby-stroller wheels, which team members
modified to make the robots.
Cikgu
Ibrahim further stated that the college has already represented the
country twice in Seoul, Korea, with the performance and functionality
of their robots significantly improving each time.
This year the SAMOT team again won
the robot contest at national level and for the third consecutive year
represented Brunei at the ABU Robocon 2005 in Beijing, China. The team
constructed a manual robot and six autonomous robots: At the local
contest the team accumulated 57 points in two games and in Beijing,
they collected 24 points in two games.
The robot's performance and team's
performance impressed the sponsors of ABU Robocon 2005 and they won
the special sponsor prize - the Toyota Award - for the country, the
Acting Principal said.
Cikgu
Ibrahim highlighted the struggle the team faced due to lack of
attention from members of the public towards the project. He expressed
gratitude to the 20 sponsors comprising major companies such as Brunei
Shell Marketing Sdn Bhd and Islamic Bank of Brunei.
The thanksgiving ceremony was then
followed with the presentation of the Toyota Award to MKJB by the
SAMOT team and certificates of participation to team members.
The event concluded with a
presentation of certificates f appreciation to sponsors'
representatives. --
