UBD Holds Seminar On Dialects In
Asia-Pacific

Begawan - An international seminar on "Austronesia Dialects in
the Asia-Pacific" drew to a close yesterday afternoon with the
presentation of certificates to all participants at the Chancellor's
Hall of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).
About 24 working papers were
presented during the three-day talk that began on October 1. The
seminar was organised by the Malay Language and Linguistics
Department, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, UBD.
Austronesia
covers all islands in the Pacific Ocean.
Present as guest of honour during the
closing ceremony was UBD Vice Chancellor Dato Paduka Dr Awg Hj Ismail
bin Hj Duraman.
Welcoming remarks were presented by
Dr Hj Azim bin Abdullah, the head of the university's Malay Language
and Linguistics Department. Dr Hj Azim is also the chairperson of the
organising committee of the seminar.
Meanwhile, the vice chancellor
stressed on the importance of learning and collecting data about the
different types of Malay dialects spoken in the Borneo island as well
as other Malay states within Southeast Asia. He also expressed his
gratitude to the committee members for their dedication and
cooperation in ensuring that the seminar was a success. --
