Teachers Urged To Be Role Model
By Azlan Othman
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Teachers in the country are urged to be a role model
to their students in the effort to produce a reading generation and
they are reminded to upgrade their knowledge from time to time and not
to be static or complacent.
Acting Minister of Education, Pg Dato
Seri Setia Dr Hj Mohammad, said this at the official opening ceremony
of an induction course for some 950 new teachers yesterday.
He said teachers should enhance their
knowledge from time to time through reading, doing research and so on.
He said in our efforts to promote the
reading habit among students, teachers should be the closest role
model to be followed. But the question is how students could become a
reading generation if the teachers themselves do not like to read.
Reading enhances information, be it general or specific.
The reading culture is still low in
this country of which teachers should be aware of. Hence, they should
become the mind stimulator. It is my hope that teachers could set the
best example in line with their profession as a teacher, he added.
"It is also my hope for teachers to
be progressive, proactive, knowledgeable and pious, and to possess a
charismatic leadership and a strong national identity. This is what we
called well-rounded teachers who help produce a credible generation
that strives for the nation's progress.
The induction course was the 10th of
its kind being held. Starting from last year, another program me
called 'mentoring' was conducted as a continuous programme for
teachers who attended the induction course as a take-off point for a
challenging teaching profession.
Some 950 teachers comprising
graduates from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and foreign and
domestic institutions as well as the Religious Teachers Training
College participated in the programme. --
