International Seminar On Languages

Begawan - An international seminar on the languages of Borneo
island that is entitled Dialects of Austeroneisa Nusantara 2 was
launched yesterday.
The seminar took off at the
chancellor hall of UBD. Highlighting the importance of the languages
of Borneo was Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Dr. Hj Mohammad bin Pg Hj Abd
Rahman, Acting Education Minister, the guest of honour at the launch
of the seminar.
He said the locals now can be
referred to as proper facilitators and qualified researchers by which
they can see deeper into the local cultural perspective, daily
lifestyles, science factor, sensitivity of the local community and
other subjects that is connected with the `ins' and outs' of local
culture.
He also expressed his appreciation of
foreign researchers who has been doing their share of work either
individually or in collaboration with their local counterparts to
produce quality results useful to the community and Brunei Darussalam.
Various challenges have been faced in
carrying out their research including sacrifices in terms of money,
time and material.
It is also in this regard that Brunei
Darussalam is classified as one of the oldest Malay Islamic
civilizations in this region not only in view of the language context
but also in terms of traditional rites, socio culture, literature and
the likes.
The guest of honour expressed his
appreciation of local cultures to an audience of about 80 people.
The workshop will present various
working papers that feature the languages practised on some parts of
Borneo Island that were once a part of Brunei Darussalam. --
