Two Indonesians Face Meat
Smuggling Charges

Begawan - Two Indonesian men, both aged 31, were brought to the
Bandar Magistrate's Court yesterday to face charges of bringing in
several kilos of dubious halal meat and chicken parts.
No pleas have been taken from both
defendants.
According to the Royal Customs and
Excise Department Prosecutor, investigations are still being carried
out as both defendants were caught bringing in the said uncustomed
goods only two days ago.
He applied for two weeks'
adjournment, which was granted by the presiding Magistrate yesterday.
The court fixed November 11 for the next hearing.
The first defendant, Ayi Suherlan
Effendi, is facing several charges of bringing in 274 kg of uncustomed
Allana meat, 30 kg of Ayam Maju A1 chicken wings, 60 kg of Seara
chicken wings and 16 kg of Danish Brand Chicken Bishop Nose in a car
bearing registration number BR 8087.
Meanwhile, his compatriot Rizzal
Samsul Bahri is facing the same charges of bringing 36 kilogrammes of
Allana Meat and 16 kg of Danish Brand Chicken Bishop Nose in a car
bearing registration number BL 389.
Both were caught at about 11.10 am in
the vicinity of Jalan Simpang No. 540-13, Taman Puri PGGMB in Kampong
Madewa.

Suherlan was yesterday released on $5,000 court bail while Rizzal
released on $3,000 court bail or one local surety each pending the
next hearing. If they fail to find a bailer, the two Indonesians will
be remanded in Jerudong Prison.
Carrying uncustomed goods into the
country is an offence under section 126(1) (e) of the Customs Act
(cap. 36) and is punishable under section 126(1) (iii) of the same. --
