Temburong Residents Earn Fat
Income From Favourite Pastime
Temburong
– Catching shrimps at sea or prawns in the river is a favourite
pastime of the residents In the Temburong District.
Trapping shrimps in nets that is laid
across the path of the crustaceans in the sea could bring in good
revenue.
Angling for lobsters in the river is
another option. Perhaps, the best catch in the Temburong River.
According to village fishermen,
prawns abound during the full moon.
However, fishermen are advised not to
go fishing at sea alone albeit a number of them prefer to fish alone.
Apart from home consumption, shrimps
from the sea fetch a good price of between $5 and $12 a kilogramme
depending on the size.
Another favourite pastime is catching
lobsters by using hook and line.
The most conventional way of catching
lobsters is by using traps locally known as bubu or rambat made from
bamboo.
Bubu
made from plastic or nylon, a durable substance, can now be bought
from the hardware shops at a cost of between $50 and $75 per piece.
Baits made from tapioca sold in the
markets are expensive, too.
To cut cost, fishermen prefer to
catch lobsters using hook and line and with luck could land a catch of
between three to four kilogrammes a day.
Lobsters normally fetch a good price
of between $13 and $14 a kilogramme.
