Bandar Seri Begawan – A joint effort between government agencies and individuals from various communities has demonstrated an exemplary model in helping an ageing woman and her family in Kampong Ayer.

The dilapidated house of the woman is in grave danger of collapsing.

Thanks to the kind hearted Bruneians, she and her family could now live in a brand new house.

Dayang Hajah Hapsah binti Samsudin, 84, has been living in Kampong Lurong Sikuna for over 40 years.

Her house was recently deemed unsafe, as the foundations were unstable which made the house to tilt.

The Brunei-Muara District Office came to her aid, but quickly determined that the cost of repairing the house was too high.

Dayang Hajah Hapsah told Radio Television Brunei (RTB) that she feared that the house would collapse at any time looking at the way the house is tilted.

The Brunei-Muara District Office, with the help of the Head of Kampong Peramu (ketua kampong peramu), found a vacant house in Kampong Peramu, and with the help of various compassionate individuals, who submitted donations, purchased the house for Dayang Hajah Hapsah.

The house has six bedrooms and will be equipped with basic facilities.

The presentation of the keys to the house by Dato Haji Adnan bin Hanafiah, the Brunei-Muara District Officer, officially declared Dayang Hajah Habsah as the legal owner of the new house.

Dayang Hajah Hapsah, who has nine children, 30 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, was filled with gratitude, and extended her sincere thanks to the generous individuals who came to her aid.

For this elderly woman, the acquisition of the new house is timely with the upcoming Hari Raya celebrations.

One of the generous contributors, Awang Chan Sui Kiat, extended a cash donation which enabled the purchase of the house.

Awang Chan Sui Kiat, who grew up in Kampong Ayer, explained that the generosity of His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei should be an exemplary to all citizens to work together and help those in need.

At the same time, the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation also extended donations in the form of school stationary and school uniform to a single mother.
