Taxi Driver Loses $200 To Indonesian Conman
By Rosli Abidin Yahya

Bandar Seri Begawan - A local man was cheated out of $200 by an Indonesian who told him that he needed to borrow the money for fifteen minutes as "show money" so he could re-enter Brunei at Kuala Lurah.

Hj Ahad bin Nayan, a taxi driver operating from the Bandar Seri Begawan taxi stand, said he hoped that people would learn from his experience and not repeat the mistake.

According to Hj Nayan, he was approached by an Indonesian, who wanted to be driven to Kuala Lurah as his visit pass would expire by the end of the day.

He said the Indonesian agreed to the $25 fare one-way and he drove the man to the Kuala Lurah border.

On arriving at Kuala Lurah, the man said he needed $300 as "show money" on re-entering Brunei Darussalam to show to the Immigration Department officials.

The man said he has only $100 and needed to borrow $200 for fifteen minutes, the time it would take to complete the journey. Hj Nayan agreed and gave the man $200.

The man said he would pay the taxi fare and give back the $200 on his return.

The incident happened at 12.30 pm. After waiting for 15 minutes, there was still no sign of the man. Hj Nayan waited until 6 pm before he realised that he had been cheated.

"The incident happened on October l l but I waited until today to give the man a chance to appear and pay me. Unfortunately, he never appeared so I hope people will learn from my experience not to trust anyone blindly.

"I also did not take down his name and address as written in his passport as I did not expect that he would cheat me," he said -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
