By Malai FadleyRizal

Bandar Seri Begawan - A 33-year-old Bangladeshi, Abbul Kashem Andul Hamid, was imprisoned for nine months yesterday after pleading guilty to a charge of remaining unlawfully in the kingdom for a period of two years and three months.

Senior Registrar Radin Safiee heard from immigrations prosecutor that Abbul came to work in the Sultanate as a tailor in September 2000 and was given a work pass which expired July 24, 2001. Two weeks earlier, Abbul’s employer had lodged a report to Muara Police station that his worker had ran away. Two days ago, enforcement personnel from the immigrations department found him during an inspection at house No.3, Jalan Selayun in Jerudong and arrested him.

Meanwhile, another Bangladeshi was fined $800 after he pleaded guilty for overstaying. Zamal Hossain Abul Hasem Fakir, 35, failed to pay the fine and was jailed for a month yesterday.

The defendant was arrested at a construction site at Jalan Wasan in Kg Bebuloh two days ago in an immigration inspection. Immigrations personnel found that Zamal’s special pass had expired in September 4 this year. He had remained in the country for forty-eight days. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
