Two Foreigners Jailed For
Overstaying

Begawan - A 33-year-old Bangladeshi, Abbul Kashem Andul Hamid,
was imprisoned for nine months yesterday after pleading guilty to a
charge of remaining unlawfully in the kingdom for a period of two
years and three months.
Senior Registrar Radin Safiee heard
from immigrations prosecutor that Abbul came to work in the Sultanate
as a tailor in September 2000 and was given a work pass which expired
July 24, 2001. Two weeks earlier, Abbul’s employer had lodged a report
to Muara Police station that his worker had ran away. Two days ago,
enforcement personnel from the immigrations department found him
during an inspection at house No.3, Jalan Selayun in Jerudong and
arrested him.
Meanwhile, another Bangladeshi was
fined $800 after he pleaded guilty for overstaying. Zamal Hossain Abul
Hasem Fakir, 35, failed to pay the fine and was jailed for a month
yesterday.
The defendant was arrested at a
construction site at Jalan Wasan in Kg Bebuloh two days ago in an
immigration inspection. Immigrations personnel found that Zamal’s
special pass had expired in September 4 this year. He had remained in
the country for forty-eight days.
