Local Fined For Smuggling Chicken

Begawan - A 26-year-old local was fined a total of $6,500 or
six months and two weeks imprisonment in default for knowingly
bringing contraband into the Sultanate.

Azri Hj Tahir pleaded guilty before Senior Registrar Radin Safiee to a
charge of conveying 53 plastic bags of chicken wings weighing a total
of 551.9 kilos in a car registered as BR6635. He was fined $6,100 or
six months’ jail in default for the charge.
Awang
Azri also pleaded guilty to a charge of conveying 3 plastic bags of
frozen meat weighing 33.5 kilos in the same car, for which he was
fined $400 or two weeks’ jail in default.

Hj Jamil Hj Tuah, a Customs prosecutor told the court that the
defendant was arrested when Customs Preventive officers spotted his
car at the Kg Salar industrial area three days. The officers found the
contraband in the car and arrested him.
During investigations, officers heard
that a man named Ramli had smuggled the items by boat from Limbang and
sent them to Awang Azri at the place where he was arrested.
The defendant said he was about to
send the contraband to a man named Ariffin at Pantai Tungku for $150.
The total amount of contraband seized
was valued at $3169.45.
A hearing on an application for
forfeiture of the car will be heard on October 30.
