Old Smuggler
By Rol Ezam
Bandar Seri
Begawan – It was the day when Chinese “heavenly money” turned
out to be smuggled chicken parts.
Tham
Tong Leong, a 66-year-old Permanent Resident was fined $500 or a month
in jail yesterday when he pleaded guilty to smuggling six kilos of
whole chicken, eight kilos of chicken wings and six kilos of chicken
breast into Brunei.
The court heard the Custom Officers
stopped the man at the Sungai Tujoh Control Post during a routine
inspection.
The officers asked him if he had
anything to declare, but he only replied that he only bought bundles
of religious prayer paper money used for burning as sacrifice to the
gods, said Hj Jamil Hj Tuah, the Customs Prosecutor.
However, when the Custom Officers
made an inspection, they found the smuggled goods estimated at $61.76,
inside the defendant’s car,
Hj
Jamil said the defendant admitted the items were belonged to him,
which he bought from Miri for his own consumption at a religious
function, and some to be given to the old people house in Seria.
