Malaysian visitors get to know how 'biometric' system operates.

Brunei immigration officers.
The Immigration and National
Registration Department yesterday received 10 personnel from the IT
Department of Malaysia Prisons, headed by its IT Officer, Encik Mohd
Shahar Salim.
The visit was initiated to take a
closer look and a better understanding of the Immigration's latest
technology in "biometric" fingerprint identification as well as the
Border Control System at the Brunei International Airport.
Upon their arrival, the group who
arrived here last Monday night, was welcomed by the Assistant Director
of the Research, Development and Computer Section of the Immigration
Department, Awg Ahmaddin Hj Abd Rahman.
A presentation on the Operations and
Objectives of the Immigration department was presented to the
visitors. The questions and answer session was handled by Acting
Assistant Director of Immigration Tuan Jumat Hj Burut; Head of
Passport, Awg Azmi Hj Hafneh; Head of IC, Awg Hj Abd Aziz Hj Sudin;
Head of Entry Permit, Dyg Liza Suryani Hj Ibrahim and Head of Working
Pass Section, Awg Hussin Ghana. The visitors them had a closer look on
the department's IC registration and reproduction system. They got
first hand knowledge on how the latest "biometric" system operates.
Through this system, a person could
be automatically identified through the fingerprints, stored in the
Brunei Smart ID card and in a central server. The Automated
Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) will automatically detect any
wrong or duplicate identity.
The system, supplied by a German
company Dermalog GmbH and a local company, Sistem Komputer Alif Sdn
Bhd, was installed in 2000, along with the new national Brunei Smart
ID card, which registers a holder's fingerprints, photo and personal
data.
