JIS music concert goes tropical

JIS instrumental programme involves over 200 students and 16 teachers.
The Jerudong International School
last week presented a "Tropical Music Concert" to a thrilled audience.
Held 'al fresco' in the JIS canteen
amphitheatre, it was the first music performance for the new academic
year.
The event was compared by veteran
Stuart Johnston whose dry wit barely matched the sultry conditions in
the JIS canteen.
The clear highlight of the evening
was a rendering of "Lord of the Dance" in which the orchestra
displayed a marvellous combination of dynamic control and rhythmic
energy.
The Primary Choir once again charmed
its audience, as did the Show Choir who performed among others a not
too hygienic combination of "Grease" and "I Ain't Gonna Wash for a
Week."
Both the Recorder Group and the
Junior String Orchestra demonstrated some very promising ensemble
playing and as always, the Jazz Band performed brilliantly with Fiona
Fung on saxophone, a standout performer.
This concert bodes well for future
musical events this year. After only eight weeks, the students have
already produced music of an exceptional quality, a testimony to the
JIS instrumental programme, which involves over 200 students and 16
teachers.
Aside from producing good musicians,
the instrumental programme has succeeded in establishing a culture
where music making is not so much seen as exceptional, but as natural.
