Local Fined $500 For Smuggling

Bandar Seri Begawan - A 26-year-old local was fined $500 or a month's jail in default after pleading guilty to smuggling beer into the country yesterday.

Senior Magistrate Hj Abdullah Soefri heard from Customs Prosecutor, Hj Jamil Hj Tuah, that Patrick bin Padan was arrested at Dermaga Bandar Seri Begawan parking lot on Tuesday.

Customs officers ambushed the defendant's carp parked at the said place after they received tip off from the public.

When checking the car, officers found 24 bottles of Guiness Stout beer wrapped in a plastic bag in the rear bonnet o f the car.

Prosecutor Hj Jamil said that during investigations, Patrick said that he had bought the contraband from Limbang and was about to sell them off to a man at the parking lot where he was arrested. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
