Prison and whipping for breaking into vehicle

Bandar Seri Begawan - A 25-year-old local man who had previous theft convictions was sentenced by the Magistrate's Court yesterday to 18 months' imprisonment and 2 strokes of the cane after he pleaded guilty to breaking into a motor vehicle in an attempt to dismantle and steal a car cassette player.

Ismawadi Ishak first got 18 months' jail for attempting to commit the theft and 6 months' jail with 2 strokes of whipping for causing damage to the cassette player worth 5120.

However, the Magistrate ordered the imprisonment sentences to run concurrently but strokes remained.

The prosecuting officer, Pg Nina Jasmine Pg Hj Bahrin said on January 13 this year, a man named Abdullah was watching television with his family at a house in Kampong Delima Satu.

Abdullah heard the sounds of someone opening the door of a car. He told two men named Noor Alam and Yusof to have a look.

Both of them saw the defendant coming out of the motor vehicle.

Seeing that, both then ran out of their house to chase the defendant.

They caught the defendant near the next-door neighbour's house, Pg Nina Jasmine said.
