His Majesty Urges OIC To Reinforce
Muslim Faith
Kuala Lumpur -
Muslims like any other people also wish to live in peace and
prosperity and contribute their talents, knowledge and skills to
humanity, said His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei in his address at the
Summit of Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) in Kuala Lumpur
yesterday.
Delivering a thought-provoking titah
in the General Debate of the OIC Summit, the Brunei ruler said that
history has demonstrated the contributions Muslims have made to human
progress until today.
His Majesty also said that there was
a time in human history when greatest advances in knowledge were taken
from Muslim scholars and shared with the rest of the world.
His Majesty believed that human
achievements owed a great deal to Islamic scholars, thinkers, artists
and scientists. All this was founded on moral imperatives, said His
Majesty.
His Majesty also said that a lot of
these encouragements are from the Islamic faith which allows Muslims
to discover, seek information and work constructively with others. His
Majesty further stated that these achievements are a matter of
enormous pride and self-respect for the Muslim people.
His Majesty said that behind the
daily adverse news on some Muslims, there are million of hard-working
Muslim citizens, sure of their faith and contributed to the well-being
of their families, communities and fellow men and women. In this
regard, His Majesty urged the OIC to give due attention to these
Muslims and hoped that OIC could help to reinforce their confidence in
the future to themselves and their fellow Muslims.
His Majesty commended on the theme
adopted for the summit. His Majesty believes that it would inspire
positive thinking at a time when many Muslims in may be questioning
their place in this world and even their feeling of being under siege
in their own societies.
His Majesty said that these feelings
go far beyond traditional domestic concerns and relations with one's
immediate neighbour. His Majesty further stated that it involved the
grave threats to national and international security posed by
terrorism and the spread of weapons of mass destruction. It also
encompassed the alarming state o f the environment of the planet.
In this regard, His Majesty said that
these problems demand solutions especially the deepening poverty
effecting millions of people, which arouse the feeling of
hopelessness, despair, anger and frustration. His is Majesty said that
every leader is aware of its effects on the daily lives of its people
and the challenges it present to stability and order.
His Majesty acknowledged that the OIC
is also facing the same difficulties as that of other cultures and
societies. In addition, said His Majesty, the OIC is facing a unique
challenge of representing Islamic nations and Muslim people, and at an
unfortunate time of great confusion all over the world.
On the Palestinian issue, His Majesty
said that OIC would like to see justice be given to their brothers in
Palestine.
His Majesty also criticised Israel's
recent attack on the sovereign territory of Syria as unacceptable to
any justification whatsoever and such an attack is a total disregard
for the basic tenets of the conduct of nations. His Majesty also said
that it was not the insistence by the OIC that all fellow Muslims
receive respect, dignity and fairness wherever they may be; but
demands that international policy be based on moral principles. Such
feelings said His Majesty were a magnificent contribution to the world
affairs and urged the OIC to do all it canto promote it.
His Majesty said that these feelings
should not be expressed in bombs and the murder of innocent fellow
human beings but rather inclusive, tolerant and multinationals and
reaches the heart of the United Nations Charter.
The evidence in practical form is not
so faraway, said His Majesty. By looking around this beautiful county,
according to His Majesty, one can see how predominantly the Muslim
nation is attempting to do just that, seeking more knowledge and at
the same time re-affirming the values upon which the society as a
whole is founded. In this regard, His Majesty congratulated the People
of Malaysia of their Achievement and endeavours.
His Majesty expressed appreciation
and deepest respect to Dato Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamed, Prime Minister
of Malaysia, for his great contribution in promoting friendship and
close cooperation between nations as well as his support and
encouragement to the ordinary people of developing countries and his
aspirations for peace, stability and happiness. His Majesty said that
for Muslims, Prime Minister Mahathir was a powerful advocate to the
causes of the Organisation particularly on the important role to be
played by Muslims in today's diverse and interdependent world.
In the evening, His Majesty joined
other OIC leaders at a dinner hosted by the Prime Minister of Malaysia
and Chairman of the 101 Session of the Islamic Summit Conference. The
dinner was held at a leading hotel in Kuala Lumpur.
Earlier in the morning His Majesty
attended the opening ceremony of the OIC Summit at the PCC.

welcomed by the Malaysian prime minister and Datin Seri Dr Siti Hasmah
Haji Ali.
