Man fined for dressing as Santa to oppose nazis

Berlin - A German man has been fined £140 for dressing up as Santa Claus to protest against a nazi march.

Christian W donned the costume to protest against a nazi march in Munich last autumn, the Sueddeutsche Zeitung reports.

On top of his motorbike suit, he wore red pants and a red shirt, a white beard and a santa hat.

Prosecutors charged him with violating Germany's ban on masking your face during demonstrations, and alleged the biking suit amounted to "passive weaponry".

But at the trial, a meteorologist confirmed his claims that it had been a cold, wet day, which justified the biking suit.

Since police photos show Christian W pulling down his beard to look into the camera, the court found it impossible to uphold he was trying to mask himself.

Instead, Judge Kai Graeber suggested ending the case without a sentence, and Christian W agreed to pay the fine in exchange. -- Annanova News
