Deputy Sultan Visits Batu Marang
School

Billah, Deputy Sultan yesterday made a visit to Kampong Batu Marang,
Mukim Mentiri.
On arrival at the village, Dato Haji
Suyoi, the Deputy Minister of Education, greeted the royal visitor.
The Deputy Sultan’s first stop was
the kampong Batu Marang Primary school.
During the visit, the Deputy Sultan
was briefed on the school's history and achievements both in academics
and extra curricular activities.
The school Headmaster Awang Alidin
Bin Haji Zainin said the school's academic achievement was very
encouraging.
The school recorded 65 per cent
passes in last year's Primary Certificate of
Education (PCE) a significant
increases from previous years results.
After the briefing session, the
Deputy Sultan toured the school facilities starting from the library.
Apart from large number of reference
materials, the library is also equipped with two set of computers for
pupils disposal.
The Deputy Sultan later proceeded to
several classrooms.
The Batu Marang Primary School was
built in 1952 before being renovated to become a permanent building,
four years later.
The school has more than one hundred
pupils under the care of more than ten teaching staffs.
From the Batu Marang Primary School,
the Deputy Sultan then toured the Kampong Batu Marang.
During the visit the Deputy Sultan
was presented with the demonstration on the making of shrimp paste
locally known as ‘Belacan’.
The Deputy Sultan also viewed a
mini-exhibition on food products and fishing equipment.
Over the years, Kampong Batu Marang
has established itself as a major producer of fish products including
shrimp paste and dried fish.
The Deputy Sultan then visited the
residents of the Ketua Kampong Batu Marang, Awang Haji Jamaludin Bin
Sapar.
Kampong Batu Marang is situated in
Mukim Mentiri, 19 kilometres from the capital.
The kampong was belived to have been
founded by four residents of Kampong Saba, who took refuge at the site
from strong winds during a fishing trip.
Majority of the residents are now
serving in the government and the private sector while others are
full-time fishermen.
The kampong is popularly known as
fishing village situated at the Brunei bay.
The Deputy Sultan wrapped the visit
with a brief stop at the Kampong Batu Marang Mosque.
The more than $3 million mosque was
built in 1998.
The visit to Kampong Batu Marang was
the second made by the royalty within two years.
His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal
Bolkiah, Sultan of Brunei, made the first visit during His Majesty’s
