Sustainable Economic Recovery Up
At APEC In Bangkok
Bandar Seri
Begawan – The sustainable economic recovery of the Asia-Pacific
region remains as one of the most important issues for the APEC
leaders when they convene in Bangkok for the eleventh APEC Economic
Leaders Meeting just a week away.
With the many challenges that have
hit the entire region over the past several years, the business
community within the APEC umbrella are very anxious for the meeting to
focus on this issue.
Each year, a report is submitted by
all the members of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) to their
respective governments.
Brunei’s 2003 ABAC report was
officially presented by Pehin Dato Awang Haji Abdul Rahman, Minister
of Industry and Primary Resources.
Brunei's report recommendations,
entitled 'Harmony in diversity: Achieving balanced and equitable
growth', calls on APEC to take the initiative in its promise to
advance the World Trade Organization's (WTO) Doha Development Agenda,
following the collapse of the WTO's failure during its latest meeting
in Cancun, Mexico, last month.
The report will be brought forward to
the APEC Economic Leaders meeting in Bangkok, Thailand next week.
Timing is important as business
confidence has been severely tested following the Asian financial
crisis, the regional terrorist attacks and the deadly SARS outbreak.
In the report, the ABAC members urge
the APEC leaders for an effective leadership and the implementation of
initiatives to ensure that the region's economy improves. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
