Jailed 3 1/2 Years For Drugs

Bandar Seri Begawan - A Local, 40, was jailed yesterday after pleading guilty to three charges under the Misuse of Drugs Act in the Magistrates' Court.

Abas bin Bakar was jailed three and-a-half years for a charge of consuming Methylamphetamine while a charge of being in possession of Methylamphetamine landed him a $1,200 fine or a two-month jail term in default.

Magistrate Mohammed Faisal also imposed another $800 fine or a month's imprisonment in default for a charge of being in possession of utensils intended for the consumption of controlled drugs.

He told the defendant that he was to serve the three years and six month sentence with effect from yesterday while default sentences of the other two charges would run after having served the custodial sentence if he failed to pay the fines. He was given a month to settle the fines.

NCB Prosecuting Officer told the court that the defendant had several previous convictions under section 6 (b) of the Misuse of Drugs Act for consumption of controlled drugs.

Meanwhile, Abas is a first offender under section 6 (a) for being in possession of Methylamphetamine. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
