Brunei To Became Safe Haven For
Laying Turtles
Bandar Seri
Begawan – The number of turtles in the sea, including Brunei
are decreasing.
Continuous efforts are needed to
encourage the number of turtles to land and lay eggs in Brunei beaches
as a safe haven.
All kinds of turtles are categorised
worldwide as endangered species.
The Insurance Islam Taib Sendirian
Berhad yesterday released two olive Ridley turtles aged one year and
two months, a green turtle, and three two years and nine month
Hawksbill turtles to mark the 10th year anniversary of the insurance
company’s formation.
The turtles were released at the
Meragang Beach led by the Acting Managing Director of the Insurance
Islam Taib, Dato Haji Junaidi.
Awang
Hariel Bin Haji Simpol from the Fisheries Department delivered a
briefing to enhance the awareness of endangered species and to
implement a strategic plan in managing, protecting and preserving sea
turtles especially in Brunei.
Dato
Haji Junaidi tagged the first turtle and then released it into the sea
followed by the other turtles.
Officers and staff of the Insurance
Islam Taib Sendirian Berhad also carried out a cleaning campaign at
the Meragang Beach.
Non-government organisations and
public play an important role in protecting the turtles by not taking
or eating any of the eggs, a Fisheries Department spokesman urged.
