Brunei’s Teenage Pregnancies
Worsen
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Teenage pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections
and tobacco related problems are the core issues affecting Brunei’s
young women.
The disclosure was made by Dr Hajah
Roselina Dato Paduka Haji Yaakub, Acting Obstetrician and
Gynaecologist Specialist at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha
(RIPAS) Hospital, yesterday.
She said some 354 teenage deliveries
were recorded last year at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha
(RIPAS) Hospital but majority of the patients did not bother to attend
antenatal care.
This situation demonstrated that
Brunei community needed to further increase its awareness of
adolescent health problems in order to render appropriate health
services to teenagers.
Speaking at a regional workshop on
social issues affecting young women, she said that adolescence, the
transition period from childhood to adulthood, is a critical time of
rapid physical, intellectual, psychosocial and ethical development of
young people.
Meanwhile, a 1998 statistics carried
out by the national nutritional survey revealed that some 5.3 percent
of the country's female population are smokers. -- Courtesy of Radio
