$3.5 Million Drainage Project Nearing Completion In Kg Jangsak

Awang Ramli Bin Haji Minuddin

Bandar Seri Begawan – A $3.2 million drainage restoration project at Kampong Jangsak in the Brunei-Muara District will be completed soon.

His Majesty’s government implemented the project in answer to the flood problem which has been affecting the village during heavy downpour.

According to the statistics from Drainage and Sewerage Department, Public Works Department, Kampung Jangsak experienced one of the worst floods at the end of the year 2000 which lasted until early 2001.

The disaster affected most parts of the village.

According to reports, the area is always flooded every time there's a heavy shower, causing several houses to be submerged under one meter of water.

The engineer at the Drainage and Sewerage Department, Awang Ramli Bin Haji Minuddin, said an allocation of more than $3.2 million has been set aside for the Kampung Jangsak restoration project.

Work, which began in October last year, is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Awang Ramli explained concrete drains measuring between 1.4 meters until 6.4 meters wide have been constructed. “Culverts are also under construction,” he said.

For safety measures, he said, his department has erected fences along the area being developed and provided a pedestrian walkway for the public's convenience.

“While work is carried out, there could be interruption to electricity and water supplies as well as the telephone service. Traffic congestion can also be expected at certain point. This is inevitable,” he said.

But such problems, Awang Ramli said, can be handled through discussion and cooperation with other departments involved in the project.

In this regard, he called on the village residents to practice tolerance and give their full support.

Meanwhile, Awang Haji Lamat Bin Abdul Rahman, Head of Kampong Kilanas, said floods which often occur at Kampong Jangsak have caused huge loss to the property.

With the current project, which cost more than $3 million dollars, he hoped it will improve the infrastructure and save the village from a similar disaster in the future. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
