More Young Women Suffer From
Breast Cancer In Brunei

Dr Haji Syafiq Bin Abdullah |
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Two thirds of those with breast cancer in Brunei are
young women.
Dr Haji Syafiq Bin Abdullah, an
Oncologist at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital,
said at the Public Forum on Breast Cancer Awareness yesterday.
He urged women not to be afraid or
ashamed but to come forward for treatment early.
Meanwhile, the second panel speaker,
Dr Harni Binti Haji Bahar said the number of deaths caused by breast
cancer is increasing from six deaths in 2001 to 15 last year.
She said that breast cancer can be
avoided if early detection and treatment are made.
“However, the cause of the breast
cancer is still unknown although one of the factors that increase the
risk is ageing,” she said.
The opinion was also supported by the
third speaker, Miss Hani Tarsil, a Senior Medical Officer in General
Surgery at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital.
She said that ignorance is the major
problem whereby women are still too shy to discuss breast cancer and
consider the subject a taboo.
The Ministry of Health and Brunei
Breast Cancer Support Group jointly organised the public forum on
breast cancer awareness.
The objective of the forum was to
provide additional knowledge regarding breast cancer to the public,
especially to women.
The ceremony was held at the
International Convention Centre in Berakas yesterday morning.
Currently, breast cancer is the most
common cancer and leading cause of death among women worldwide. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
