Ministry Expresses Concern On Education Standard

Bandar Seri Begawan – The Ministry of Education is concerned with raising the standard of education to meet the needs of the country’s students while fulfilling the national goals and aspirations.

However, the ministry is also concerned with the raising of standard of the English language in schools since it has become the medium of instruction for many subjects.

This was disclosed this afternoon by Dato Haji Suyoi, Acting Minister of Education at the English language teaching conference.

Dato Haji Suyoi said it is very appropriate for the Ministry of Education to raise standards in English language.

“At PMB level the percentage of credit passes average 39.64 per cent for government schools for the last five years while the percentage for Brunei Cambridge 'O' level English language credit passes have remained at 12.8 per cent for government schools over the same period,” he said.

He added that work had been underway to review the current examination system.

According to Dato Haji Suyoi, the overall national assessment system survey of the 'N' level curriculum has also been looked into by the ministry.

This will have major implications on the curriculum and directly on the training of the teaching force years to come.

The two-day English language teaching conference is being attended by more than 80 English teachers at government and non-government schools in the country.

Several speakers from Brunei and overseas present papers, including those on curriculum reform, raising standards of English through ICT and drama as a method for teachers of English.

The conference is jointly organised by the centre for British teachers, CfBT and British Council. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
