More Women Die Of Breast Cancer In Brunei

Bandar Seri Begawan – More women in Brunei died of breast cancer even as cancer became the second killer after heart disease in the Sultanate last year.

Datin Dr Hajah Intan Binti Haji Mohd Salleh, Director General of Health Services, said at the launching ceremony of Breast Cancer Awareness Month yesterday that in Brunei, women aged 40 to 49 years old recorded the highest number of breast cancer.

According to the statistics in Brunei from 1998 to 2002, a total of 153 breast cancer cases were reported. Last year alone, 52 cases were detected.

The cause of breast cancer is from cells in breast tissues developed at uncontrollable condition.

If early detection and treatment are made earlier, the cancer will spread over lymph glands and other organs such as the bones, lungs and liver.

When breast cancer is first detected, it usually comes without pain or any changes that can be felt.

However, when the cancer grows, it will cause changes such as a lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm area, a change in breast size, pain at nipple or an inverted nipple, breast skin looks ridged or pitted and breast skin or nipple feels or looks different such as feels warm, is swollen or is red.

One of the ways to cope better with breast cancer is by eating well. Good nutrition is important for people with cancer.

That is because the illness itself as well as it treatments, may affect the appetite.

By eating a variety of foods that provide the nutrients needed to maintain health while fighting cancer.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month was jointly organised by the Ministry of Health and Brunei Breast Cancer Support Group.

The support group was formed since September 2001 to assist and to give moral support in terms of emotion and counselling for women who suffers breast cancer as well as providing the correct information to help them to reach maximum recovery.
