Brunei Faces Bogus Electronic
Goods Invasion
By Ignatius Stephen
Bandar Seri
Begawan – A mountain of bogus electronic goods is hitting
Brunei bringing along with it much anguish and aggravation.
Many unsuspecting people have bought
car CDs, audio players fax machines and computers and similar things
but only to find their joy short lived.
And angered and frustrated they make
a song and dance of it in vain before the dealers who had not given
them a guarantee card.
After applying extreme and persistent
pressure some unhappy purchasers get their money back but others have
their equipment repaired only to face constant breakdowns.
Mr
Steven Goh, Business Development Manager, Interhouse Marketing Sdn Bhd
sole distributors for a variety of Cannon products in Brunei said it
is a good idea for all genuine dealers and distributors to get
together to form an association to fight bogus transactions in the
interest of the public.
“But it would cost a lot of money.
And it’s only logical that we unite to raise the cash,” he suggested.
Educating the public is another
factor. “Who is funding the pirates?” he asked. “We, as consumers, are
when we buy bogus items at a slightly lower price. We must therefore
insist on genuine parts and equipment,” he added.
He also pointed out the safety factor
adding that there have been instances of mobile phones blowing up
because bogus batteries.
Mr
Wong Kok Phing, General Manager, Multitrons Sdn Bhd sole distributors
for Sony has also begun a fight against pirated goods.
In a front page advertisement in the
Borneo Bulletin yesterday his company urged customers to insist on
genuine Sony Warranty Certificate when buying Sony products.
Multitrons
Sdn Bhd only can warrant and guarantee Sony products with genuine Sony
Warranty certificates, the advertisement runs.
“Sony Customer Service Centre is
professionally trained to maintain and service Sony products with
genuine parts from Sony,” it says in its drive against the pirates.
Mr
Wong has also pointed out that some dealers are cheating the public in
selling bogus goods at genuine prices.
“This downright passing off should be
seriously looked into,” he added.
