Crying foul over foreign security personnel
By Rosli Abidin Yahya

A local security company providing guards to local establishments moaned about some companies having allegedly employed foreign workers to work as their security personnel.

However, the managing director of the security company said the foreign workers cum the security guards are not allowed to be employed as such.

The managing director alleged that such foreign workers were wrongly employed as the Labour Department never allow or give quota for any establishments to employ foreigners as security personnel.

"The labour quotas of such companies stated that the workers are to be employed as labours or drivers and not as security guards," he said.

The Borneo Bulletin went around various establishments and learned that some companies had foreign workers as their security personnel while other firms have locals as their security guards.

The managing director said if companies employ locals as security personnel then they are not in breach of any law and regulation.

In fact, he said such move should be applauded as it would create employment for the locals.

He said it is definitely not easy to attract locals to work as security personnel but companies are encouraged to employ locals only.

However, he said some companies prefer to set up their own security departments and get away with employing foreigners.
