Bandar Seri
Begawan - The Magistrate’s Court on Saturday imposed a fine of
$1,500 on a 26-year-old Indonesian waiter who stole his employer’s
mobile phone from his workplace. However, he failed to pay the fine
and had to serve the default sentence of one month in prison.
Joko
Prasetyo pleaded guilty to stealing a Nokia 2100 belonging to his
employer before Magistrate Dk Masni Pg Hj Bahar.
The court heard that ten days ago,
the complainant and her husband by chance met with the defendant at
the Bumiputera complex in the capital. Whilst talking to the
defendant, the complainant’s husband noticed that the defendant was
holding a mobile phone similar to the missing phone belonging to the
complainant. They then asked the defendant if they could take a look
at the said phone but the defendant refused and quickly left.
The complainant then lodged a police
report on the same day at the Lamunin Police Station where police
investigations revealed that the mobile phone found to be in the
defendant’s possession was indeed the one belonging to the
complainant, the court was told.
He was employed as a waiter at Hj
Judin Restaurant at No. 1581, Simpang 1581 in Kampong Lamunin between
the month of August and September this year. The restaurant is owned
by the family of the complainant, Hjh Norain Hj Judin.
The Deputy Public Prosecutor said
that the defendant committed the offence sometime in September 9. He
was working at the said restaurant when he saw a Nokia mobile phone
(model 2100) belonging to the complainant, which was placed on top of
the counter in the restaurant.
Upon seeing the said mobile phone and
seeing that there was no one in the restaurant, the defendant then
proceeded to take the said phone. He then used the stolen mobile phone
for his own use, said the DPP.
