Sultan Discusses Bilateral Ties
With President Megawati

His Majesty with Indonesian President

– His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah and Indonesian
President Her Excellency Megawati Soekarnoputri discussed bilateral
cooperation between the two countries yesterday morning.
The bilateral relations were
discussed when the Sultan paid a courtesy call on Indonesian President
Megawati, who is also the Chairman of the 9th Asean Summit.
During the meeting, both leaders also
exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual
concern.
Present during the courtesy call was
His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, Brunei’s Minister of
Foreign Affairs.
Also present were Pehin Dato Awang
Haji Abdul Rahman, Minister of Industry and Primary Resources; Dato
Haji Mohd Amin, Brunei’s Ambassador to Indonesia; Dato Haji Hazair,
Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office; and, Pehin Dato
Awang Lim Jock Seng, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs.
In the afternoon, His Majesty
attended the BIMP-EAGA leaders meeting held at the Bali International
Convention Centre in Nusa Dua.
His Majesty was accompanied by His
Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah.
Indonesian President Megawati
Sukarnoputri chaired the meeting among the BIMP-EAGA leaders.
It was also attended by the Right
Honourable Dato Dr Mahathir Mohd, Prime Minister of Malaysia, and Her
Excellency Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, President of the Republic of the
Philippines.
The leaders discussed BIMP-EAGA
activities and cooperation as well as the future direction of the
organisation.
During the meeting, His Majesty
welcomed the convening of the first ever BIMP-EAGA leaders meeting and
noted its achievements in various sectors such as transportation,
telecommunication services and tourism.
Taking note of the four areas that
have been identified to revitalise business activities in the
BIMP-EAGA region, His Majesty urged ministers and officials to work
toward deepening and broadening these areas.
His Majesty emphasised on the need to
continue to strengthen cooperation in the region in order to
accelerate the socio-economic development and alleviate the living
