Sultan Joins 9th Asean Summit In
Bali

Bali, Indonesia
– His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah arrived in Bali,
Indonesia, to attend the 9th Asean Summit which opened today.
Present at Ngurah Rai Bali Airport to
greet His Majesty were Indonesia’s Minister of Resettlement and
Infrastructure, His Excellency Surnano and other senior officials of
the Indonesian government.
Also present were Dato Dr Haji Mohd
Amin, the Brunei’s Ambassador to Indonesia, and officials of the
Embassy of Brunei in Jakarta.
His Majesty is accompanied by His
Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, Brunei’s Minister of Foreign
Affairs.
The 9th Asean Summit begins today
with His Majesty joining other Asean leaders to a working dinner. It
goes on until Wednesday, October 8.
The theme for this year’s summit is
"Towards an Asean economic and security community".
During the summit, the Asean leaders
are expected to discuss regional and international political and
economic issues, Asean integration and the Asean plus 3 Cooperation.
The Asean leaders are also expected
to endorse and sign the declaration of Asean Concord 11 (Bali Concord
11).
The declaration outlines the proposed
Asean security community, Asean economic community and Asean social
and cultural community.
His Majesty will also join other
Asean leaders in a series of summit meetings with their counterparts
from China, Japan, and Republic of Korea as well as India on October
7-8.
The Asean leaders and their
counterparts from China, Japan and India will sign several documents
to further strengthen their cooperation.
The Asean leaders will also witness
the accession of China and India to the treaty of amity and
