Bandar Seri
Begawan – The unique flavours of Japanese cuisine have
captivated Bruneians prompting a number of Japanese restaurants to
mushroom in Brunei.
Banking on this positive development,
the Embassy of Japan and the Japanese Association of Brunei Darussalam
organised a Japanese Food Festival as part of the Asean-Japan Exchange
Year 2003 in the capital.
One of the main attractions of the
food festival was the 'Candy Art', prepared by Mr. Michio Aoki, a
Japanese candy artist.
A traditional Japanese handicraft,
Candy Art began around the turn of the 18th century, requiring great
skills by the candy artist to produce the perfect piece of candy by
moulding it into assorted shapes and sizes.
The thronging public attending the
food festival were treated to the preparing of Japanese specialties
such as sushi and tempura by Chef Takeshi Inagaki.
They also feasted on some of the
delicacies which were offered to the public.
His Excellency Nisaka Yoshinobu,
Japanese Ambassador to Brunei, said that the food festival is aimed at
providing Bruneians the opportunity to experience the traditional
nature of Japanese food as well as to gain a deeper understanding of
the Japanese culture which will further strengthen the bonds and
develop greater understanding between Brunei and Japan.
The festival continues today. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
