Brunei Culture To be Fortified
Against Change
Bandar Seri
Begawan – The principal of History Centre yesterday stressed on
the need for fortification of culture against the tide of change but
in keeping with time and at the same time preserving its originality.
Pehin Dato Dr Haji Awang Muhammad
Jamil Al-Sufri, Principal of History Centre, said this in his working
paper entitled "Adat Istadat Brunei" at the seminar on Brunei history
yesterday.
He said that coloniser will always
make an attempt to deviate the paradigm of the colonised in order to
make them forget about their roots in cultures and norms.
“Colonisers will maintain that
cultures of the colonised are archaic and useless,” he added
The Principal emphasised that failure
at nurturing national customs to the young generation will make it
easy for the coloniser to assimilate their ideas and culture.
He believes that people, who violate
the country's customs or culture, is considered a disgrace to their
nationality.
The three-day seminar, which carried
the theme "Menyusuri Sejarah Nasional", is jointly organised by the
Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah and the association of
dignitaries.
More working papers are scheduled to
be tabled by experts from within and outside the country on the
history and culture of early Brunei up to the era of the fifth Sultan
of Brunei. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
