Jail Term For Overstaying Thais
By Malai FadleyRizal

Bandar Seri Begawan - Two Thai men were sent to jail for eight months by the Magistrates’ Court yesterday when they pleaded guilty to overstaying.

Samai Homsombat, 41 and Suthinan Bundee, 29, were arrested together at workers quarters in Ladang Betumpu Kampong Masin three days ago.

They failed to produce their passports to enforcement personnel from the Immigrations Department.

The Prosecutor told the court that Suthinan came here in 1995 as a labourer and was supposed to return to Thailand by July 31, 1997 after his employer cancelled his employment pass two days earlier.

Suthinan’s employer also lodged a report saying that the defendant had run away. He had left his employer and remained here illegally for six years and two months.

Meanwhile, Samai, the court heard, came here to work with R&S Corporation and was given an employment pass valid until September 13, 1996.

The Prosecutor said the defendant had not asked for an extension for his pass and remained unlawfully in Brunei for about seven years and two weeks. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
