By Azlan Othman & Hj Minor Absah

Tutong - A couple was nabbed in a religious raid when eight religious enforcement officers from the Tutong District conducted an operation at around 12.15am on October 1.

Following a tip-off, the eight enforcement officers conducted a spot check on a business premise in Mukim Tanjong Maya and detained the couple for close proximity or ‘khalwat’ which is an offence under Chapter 77, Amendment 1984 of the Religious Council Act and Kadhi Court.

The 60-year-old man is said to be the owner of the premises while the woman is a domestic helper who has been working here for more than a year. The suspect claimed he was inside the room to arrange matters to make the domestic helper his second wife.

The couple was later released on bail under Chapter 77 Amendment 1984, Section 177 (1) and (2) of Kadhi Court. The woman was released on bail of $500 while the man was released on a $1,000 bail. The man was again ordered to be present at the Religious Office in Tutong District on Oct 7, 2003 for investigation.

Religious enforcement officers said a second offence is punishable with two months’ jaid or a fine of $2,000 for the man and one month imprisonment or a fine of $1,000 for a second related offence, if convicted. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
