Thai Pays For His 13 Years On The Run
By Rol Ezam

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Bandar Magistrate’s Court yesterday sentenced a 44-year-old Thai national to 13 months jail when he pleaded guilty to remaining in this country unlawfully for 13 years and nine months, after the expiry of his employment pass on December 9, 1989.

Sawat Innuan was arrested by Immigration Officers three days ago at a house used as working quarters near Ladang Bertumpu in Kg Masin on suspicion of being an illegal immigrant, the court heard.

The Immigration Prosecutor said yesterday investigations showed that Sawat had come to this country on December 12, 1988 for employment with Sekata Jaya as a labourer.

Ever since then, the defendant did not seek an extension of his employment pass and thus remained unlawfully in this country for more than a decade until the date of his arrest, the prosecution told the court. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
