Minister Cautions Internet Users On Undesirable Information

Bandar Seri Begawan – The Brunei community is reminded to be always on alert of any unhealthy elements which could be available on the Internet.

Dato Haji Suyoi, Acting Minister of Education, issued this reminder at the final of Inforama Quiz Competition 2003 among government and non-government secondary and primary schools all over Brunei.

He said the undesirable information may come from irresponsible people who are only concern about their own commercial benefits.

Dato Haji Suyoi also said that in this aspect, teachers have a vital role to control and supervise the good and bad information found in the internet so that the development of ICT, which is supposed to bring benefits to the users, will not bring problems.

“Well directed and controlled guidance should be continued to instil the culture of being well-informed among students from the early stage in line with the global development based on e-knowledge,” he added.

He said the Ministry of Education through e-Government projects will continue to focus on ICT where almost all schools under the ministry will be equipped with computer laboratory and, in due course, internet facilities will be supplied to all schools in the country.

A total of 18 finalists representing eight schools competed for honours in the final of Inforama Quiz Competition which divided into three levels.

PDS School in Jangsak was the overall champion in level one for primary schools, while the Saint Andrew's School was the overall champion in level two for lower secondary. Chung Hwa Middle School was the overall champion in level three for upper secondary schools.

The competition took place at the International Convention Centre in Berakas yesterday.

The Ministry of Education and the Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) Company Sendirian Berhad jointly organised the competition.

The Inforama is an ICT-oriented educational competition specifically designed for students from both government and non-government schools in the country.

This year theme is "ICT for learning and life" in view of ICT’s multi-faceted impacts to the end-users regardless of profession, culture and age.

With the selection of the theme, it is hope to create awareness of the significance of ICT beyond the confinement of the school institution.

Among the objectives of Inforama are to instil awareness on students and the public about ICT usage in the community, issues involving computer technology and to introduce computer usage, electronic communication and system operation as tools for information management. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
