ASEAN Tourism More Challenging
Than Ever

Begawan – Tourism in Asean is now more challenging than it has
ever been before, since the incidents of September 11, war on Iraq,
SARS and lately the terrorism bombings in Bali and Jakarta.
Sheikh Jamaluddin,Director of Brunei
Darussalam Tourism Development, Ministry of Industry and Primary
Resources, made the remarks at the official launching of Asean Dance
Festival 2003 at the Indoor Stadium Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium
in Berakas.
He said even though tourism is known
to be the number one industry in the world, where it is possible to
generate millions of new jobs, it is also known as the most sensitive
industry in the world.
According Sheikh Jamaluddin, global
airlines and hoteliers are being hit due to adverse publicity and
travel advisories, especially after the dreadful incidents.
Tourism industry, he further
mentioned, is always the first to be hit and the last to recover in
time of crisis.
The Asean Dance Festival 2003 was
officially launched by Pehin Dato Dr Haji Awang Hussain, Minister of
Culture, Youth and Sports.
It is the first Asean Dance Festival
to be held in the country from October 1 to 6, 2003. The Ministry of
Culture, Youth and Sports organized the it.
The performance will contribute to
the strengthening of understanding between the Asean countries and the
