A smashed window where a resident made his exit after his floor tiling moved and blocked his door from opening.

Panic-stricken residents of a four-storey flat in Sg 15 of Jln Gadong, evacuated the building close to midnight on Wednesday when floor tiling in one of the units was suddenly forced up to three inches high.

The incident occurred at unit A2, occupied by Hj Ramlee Hj Abd Rahman who has been staying in the building for the past eight years, causing some 30 families to flee in fear of structural defects.

When he could not open the door due to the warped flooring, Hj Ramlee smashed some window panes to flee.

Other occupants in the flat include personnel from the Fire Services Department. One fire engine with seven personnel led by Pg. Hj Mohd Daud B. Pg Hj Mohammad, Acting Assistant Director of Technical from Berakas Fire Station, was rushed to the scene to inspect the safety of the building for tenants.

Yesterday morning, the occupants returned to the flat after it was announced to be safe for occupancy.

The flat also accommodates among other businesses, workshops. It is believed that external heat and heat generated by workshops could have resulted in the flooring to expand, thereby pushing up the tiles.
