International literary events to
be held in Kuching this month

Local literary enthusiasts are
invited to partake in a number of international literary events
scheduled to take place in Kuching, Malaysia this month. It will be
held in conjunction with Sarawak's Ruby Jubilee Independence Day
celebration.
A gathering of literati from the
Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA)
will first meet on October 9-10 to discuss cultural cooperation and
development in the region. Brunei Darussalam is expected to send some
representatives for the gathering.
The meeting themed "Tradition of
Literature in Consolidating Economic and Social Relations" is jointly
organised by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) Sarawak, Sabah Language
and Literature Council, South-East Asia Literature Council (MASTERA),
National Association of Malaysian Literary Writers (GAPENA) and
Angkatan Sasterawan Sarawak.
Two Kalimantan theatre groups -
Sanggar Theatre Banjarmasin and Taman Budaya Kalimantan Barat - are
scheduled to perform at the meeting.
The second international event will
be a poetry recital on October 11 which would explore how to write
poems about cities, and the reasons behind it.
Poets from Kuala Lumpur, Kuching,
Bangkok, Jakarta, Manila, Moscow and Singapore have been invited to
participate in the recital organised by DBP Sarawak.
