Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign
in October
By Achong Tanjong
Breast cancer is the most common
cancer and leading cause of death among women worldwide and it is
important for everyone to know more about the disease and early
detection.
In this context, the Brunei Breast
Cancer Support Group and the Ministry of Health will co-organise the
"Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign" on October 9. The event will be
launched by Datin Paduka Dr. Hjh Intan from the Ministry of Health at
the lobby of the RIPAS Outpatient area.
In conjunction with the campaign a
public forum entitled "Let's Fight Breast Cancer Together", will be
held on October 10 at 8.30 am at the International Convention Centre
in Berakas.
The forum is scheduled to be
presented by Dr. Teo Leen Na, Specialist Oncologist, Dr. Hj Syafiq
Abdullah, Mr. David of Medical Social Services Department and Senior
Medical Officer General Surgery, Ms Hani Trasil, all from RIPAS
Hospital. The organiser of the event said during the campaign
exhibition booths, which focus on breast cancer awareness will also be
held at the lobby of the RIPAS Outpatient until end of October.
The exhibition and forum hope to give
and share vital information about what everyone should know about
breast cancer and how to do a breast self-examination as early
detection saves lives.
The forum also provides the
opportunity for members of the public to consult the doctor and learn
as much as they can about the danger of breast cancer so that life can
be protected before it is too late.
At the press conference held recently
at the RIPAS Hospital, Datin Paduka Hajah Rokiah Hj Zakiah said, the
campaign, the first of its kind, will be an annual event in the month
of October.
The press conference was co-chaired
by Datin Paduka Hajah Rokiah Hj Zakiah and Dr. Teo Leen Na. She added
that, the objective of the campaign was to create awareness on the
causes of breast cancer. And at the same time the group also aims to
gather as many survivors of the disease to let them share their
experience with other patients who have been diagnosed with breast
cancer and provide them with support.
The Breast Cancer Group, breast
cancer nurses, breast cancer surgical team, physiotherapist,
occupational therapist, dietician and oncologist will displayed their
own booths at the event - to give an opportunity to the public to ask
question on breast cancer.
