The Head of Investigation & Prosecution Syariah Tutong, with
several officers and police from the Tutong police station raided a
house in Kg Bangungos, Bukit Sibut, Tanjong Maya Tutong, to
investigate public complaints of Khalwat (close proximity).
Two men and two women were found on
the premises, and were questioned by officers.
The passports of the foreigners were
kept for further investigation.
If found guilty they would be charged
under the Islamic Religious Council Act Paragraph (117) amendment
1984, under section 177 (1) and fined $1000 for the men and section
177 (2) and fined $500 for the women.
One local man and three foreigners,
two of whom were women, were fined $500 with a guarantee of the
employer.
The house owner, in his 70s, had
misunderstood the situation and quarrelled with the officers.
He had proved uncooperative with the
officials, and tried to hinder the investigating officers.
His teenage sons tried to calm him
down to no avail.
The officers had to threaten him with
a court order to stop him from interfering with their work.
He then calmed down and let the
officers continue with their investigation.
