Relationship between sultanates
bloom over the years
Relationship between the
sultanates of Brunei Darussalam and Oman dates back to ancient
history of merchants sailing the high seas from the Gulf of Oman to
China, through the ports of prosperous Islamic Brunei Sultanate.
Oman was among the first countries
to establish diplomatic relations with Brunei and opened its embassy
in Bandar Seri Begawan, immediately after her independence in 1984.
Oman attaches great importance to
its bilateral relations with Brunei.
Mutual understanding and friendship
between His Majesty Sultan Qaboos and His Majesty the Sultan and
Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam have always solidified
relations between the two countries.
By virtue of their common
membership of UN, NAM and OIC, and both as developing countries with
traditional and cultural ties, Brunei and Oman enjoy a fair degree
of commonality in their perceptions on major international issues.
Development of the bilateral
relations has been marked, among others, by the setting up of a
joint committee for annual bilateral consultations between the two
countries.
Added to that was the signing of
several agreements on mutual understanding and cooperation in
various fields.
The latest among these agreements
was the MOU between the Ministry of Higher Education, the Sultanate
of Oman and the Ministry of Education, Brunei Darussalam, on
cooperation in training and education.
There have also been a number of
exchanges of visits at the ministerial-level between Oman and
Brunei.
These exchanges intensified and
extended the dimensions of Oman's bilateral relationship with
Brunei.
