Society's Role In Mental Health

Bandar Seri Begawan - More than a hundred people were present at the launch of the World Mental Health Day with the theme "Mental health in a changing world: the impact of culture and diversity", yesterday at the Centerpoint hotel in Gadong.

The guest of honour who also launched the event was Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Haji Suyoi Bin Hj Osman, Minister of Health.

The event began with welcoming remarks by Dr Hjh Norlila Binti Dato Paduka Hj Abdul Jalil, co-chairman of the event. She said, "The psychiatry department annually holds various activities to achieve the objectives which are to impede the rate of mental health cases in society and encourage society to bring mental patients to seek medical help as early as possible before it turns chronic."

Speaking on the theme she said, "Socio cultural factors play an important role in determining the types of experience that generate mental stress, the mental illness faced, behaviour in acquiring support and treatment and the response towards the treatment."

This was followed by the guest of honour's speech and a video clip on mental health towards the end of a forum on mental health, participated by Dr Ramli bin Hassan, Psychiatric Specialist; Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Abang Besar; Professor Mohamed Hatta Shahrom and Dr Abang Bennet Abang Taha.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
