Secondary Co-Op An Opportunity To
Stay Sustainable
By Hussin HJ
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Cooperatives (Coops) serve many different purposes
and are classified by their roles and membership. There are also
different levels of co-ops - primary and secondary. A primary co-op
(predominantly active in Brunei) is one where all the members are
individuals and the main purpose is to provide employment, goods or
services to its members. A secondary co-op is one in which the
members are primary co-ops and its purpose is to render services to
these member co-ops.
In Brunei Darussalam, a relative
number of co-ops are unable to run the business individually because
of the lack of competitiveness, low membership participation with
small start-up shares and lack of management skills and
professionalism. This is where the concept of a secondary co-op
comes to the fore and could provide a better deal for co-op bodies
to group together and pool resources to achieve a common goal.
In a briefing which was attended by
members of co-op bodies held at BINA Headquarters in Gadong
recently, Awang Masri bin Haji Durahim, Head of Education and
Training Unit of Co-operative Development of BINA asserted this
concept as imbued in the 6th Principle of Co-ops where cooperation
among co-ops is indispensable in order to remain competitive and
sustainable. -- Courtesy of Borneo
